My audition slot is at five in the morning!
I'm in shock, until I remember that George said he meditates at four a.m. He must immediately get to work after meditating. At least that's the story I'm telling myself, rather than another less empowering story, which is that the whole day is fully booked for him to see other actresses and this is the only time they can give me.
Whether or not he's seeing hundreds of actresses today, I will stand out, I tell myself.
I pack my suitcase and check out of my hotel, then jump into a taxi. When I get to the audition, I deliver my lines with this random dude and the audition is over in seven minutes flat.
George Dumas isn't even there.
I flip through the script before leaving, trying to get a feel for what the film is actually about. I pause when I see that stunt drivers will be needed for a number of car chase scenes. I approach a member of the casting crew and recommend Gisele, a Saints and Sinners contestant who didn't show last night. I've been thinking about her, wondering what she's up to. I don't know if she has any interest in being a stunt driver. If not, she can just say no if the casting crew gets in touch. She's currently a getaway driver for the mafia. I'd imagine this would be a step up for her.
As I leave, a dark figure emerges from one of the audition rooms.
Colby.
My heart goes to war with my ribs. I don't know whether to acknowledge him or just keep walking.
What would be the more mature thing to do?
Forget maturity, my brain screams at me. Just get yourself away from him.
"How did it go?" Colby asks casually like there haven't been three months of silence between us, prior to which he broke my heart.
I guess I can't avoid him now. I kind of have to reply to him. But I'm not going to stop walking. "I thought it went well," I say, continuing toward the exit.
Colby falls into step with me. "I guess we just have to wait and see. The waiting is always the hardest part. What role did you audition for?"
"Leading lady."
I wonder if I should have auditioned for some other roles as well. Getting cast in any part would be awesome. At least I'd be in a movie even if I'm not in the starring role.
Colby pushes the door open and lets me walk out first. I catch a whiff of his cologne as I pass him and immediately try to exhale it before it fills my lungs.
Outside, birdsong fills the air. The sun warms my skin and a breeze lifts my curls from my shoulders.
"Where are you going now?" Colby asks, glancing at my suitcase.
"Straight to the airport." I look at my watch. I thought I would have to rearrange my flight because of this audition, but it was nice and quick.
Jonathan, Louis, and Tiwa are flying back to DC with me.
